The Eagles’ ended their hibernation this week, defeating Vanguard University in two home games by 2-0 and 3-0.
The Eagles started their ace on the mound, senior pitcher Lyndsie Roberts, twice in both games due to injury Junior Kristin Larson suffered last weekend. Roberts was on her game as she only allowed 10 hits over 14 scoreless innings, adding three strikeouts.
Offensively, seniors for Biola produced the first run with a solo home run by Krista Johnson, and this continued in the 5th inning as senior Brittany Bury drove in the second run of the game with a single. These two runs were defended with solid defense and again with Roberts pitching.
The Lions threaten to score in the sixth inning as they had a runner on third base with only one out. Off a comeback shot to Roberts, the runner stumbled back to third, but Roberts made the heads up throw back to third to end the threat.
In the next game, Roberts took her second wind and gained her second win. She even helped out with her bat as she drove in Bury off a single to left field in the bottom of the first inning. In the third inning, with a runner on first Roberts smashed the ball over right field fence to give her team a nice three-run cushion.
Although the Lions got seven hits, they remained stagnant in scoring. Roberts had two complete games and her two wins jumped her pitching record up to 9-11. Although the softball team has experienced an eight game losing streak and lost 11 of their last 14 games, they still seem determine to finish strong. The Eagles also celebrated four seniors Tuesday, as it was Biola softball’s last home game of the season.
Last weekend, the Eagles played a crucial doubleheader against archrival Azusa Pacific. One bad inning in the first game gave Azusa the push they needed to take the win in extra innings by a score of 2-1. Roberts took the loss but had to pick up the slack in the next game due to Larson’s unforeseen injury.
Biola played extra innings again in the second game, but again were unable to pull away from the 3-3 tie. Instead, Azusa grabbed the lead when Cougars sophomore Erika Marmolejo drove home the winning-run with a double in the eighth inning to give the Cougars the 4-3 victory.
The Eagles are 19 -21 overall and 9-13 in GSAC. Their victory against the Lions has given them the No. 5 spot in the standings. They will have their last game of the season this Saturday in Irvine against No. 3 GSAC opponent Concordia.
