The Biola baseball team finally had a strong performance in all aspects of the game as they pummeled Cal State San Marcos 15-2 on Monday. Though the game was a non-conference game, the win gives Biola momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The Eagles have just eight games remaining in the regular season, all of which are against teams in their conference.

Biola improved to 22-16 on the season, snapping a three game losing streak. The Eagles are currently 14-14 on the season. Coming off a sweep from No. 5 Cal Baptist, the Eagles showed their dominance against the Cougars.

The Eagles have been known for their offense, being able to swing the bat with anyone Coach Verhoeven said. Early injuries to key players however have limited the pitching rotation.

Sophomore Phillip Blazek started the game for the Eagles from the mound. Ironically enough, he was a player who began the year as an outfielder, but moved to the mound when injuries arose.

Blazek pitched 71 total pitches, including two strikeouts and gave up just hits. On the offensive side of the ball the Eagles recorded 22 hits, including five home runs.

Sophomore Boone Farrington began the game with a single to center field. Junior Garrett Leon stepped to the plate and recorded a double to left center field. With two players on base, sophomore Vinnie Fayard pounded a two-run RBI single to center field, giving the Eagles a two run lead.

After a scoreless second inning for the Cougars, the Eagles added two more runs on singles from Leon and sophomore Mike Lopez. They would add two more runs on a two-run home run by senior Armando Arzate, pushing the lead to 6-0.

Leon led off the fourth inning with a solo home run of his own, putting Biola up by 7. Blazek held the Cougars scoreless yet again in the sixth inning, giving Biola the opportunity to take a commanding 11-0 lead in the fifth inning.

Sophomore Mac Sullivan began the inning with a solo home run to center field. Freshmen Christopher Neal pounded a two-run home run following a single by Arzate. Trever Blood added one more run with an RBI-single.

In the sixth inning, the Eagles added three more runs to extend their lead to 14. Sullivan led things off with a single to right field. Lopez took the plate and hit an RBI-double while Farrington recorded a two-run home run.

The Cougars would score their only pair of runs in the eighth inning, but failed to start any sort of comeback.

The strong Eagle performance comes after a weekend sweep by No. 5 Cal Baptist. The Eagles rallied in both games, but failed to complete the comebacks. Biola dropped the first game 17-12 and the second game 6-5.

The Eagles return to the field Sat. April 24th in a crucial doubleheader against Fresno Pacific in Fresno.
