Women’s tennis defeats La Verne 5-4

Biola women’s tennis team got its rackets ready and went up against the University of Laverne and arch-rival Azusa Pacific University.

Biola women’s tennis team got its rackets ready and went up against the University of Laverne and arch-rival Azusa Pacific University.

On Friday, the women played the University of La Verne to a total match time of 3 hours and 45 minutes. The women won the meet with an overall score of 5-4.

The women’s doubles teams dominated La Verne. Senior Joelle Tanaka and junior Samantha Weng won their doubles match over La Verne’s Kelly Griffith and Megan Dean by a score of 8-1. Senior Christine Garner and junior Kristen Williams soundly defeated the team of Katrina Tormos and Jessenia Garcia by the same score. Finally, to round out the excellent doubles play was senior Brea Roth and sophomore Danielle Calbeck who battled Jennifer Baca and Vanessa Vasquez to a 9-7 victory.

Individually, the top performer for Biola was Tanaka, who defeated her opponent Griffith in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-0.

After the matches, the men and women helped with a USTA (United States Tennis Association) event for kids.

Only a few days later women battled with Azusa. Though they lost 0-9, they played extremely well against the # 6 ranked school in the NAIA.

Their next match on Friday the 19th, against Notre Dame de Namur.
