There were two perfect Eagle teams coming into Saturday evening’s battle in Chase Gymnasium. Only one could emerge victorious and remain perfect. Unfortunately the men’s basketball team tcould not keep its unblemished record, falling to Concordia University 66-56.
Concordia senior guard Terrence Worthy scored a game high of 22 points and hit back-to-back three-pointers with four minutes to play, which proved to be the dagger in Biola’s heart.
Biola senior Rocky Hampton battled tough, netting 14 points and 10 rebounds, all coming in the second half, while adding four blocks in 29 minutes.
Biola got behind right off the bat, which was a major disadvantage. Concordia went on a 9-1 run to begin the game, forcing the Eagles to battle back.
Biola did just that, mirroring Concordia’s 9-1 run with a 9-1 run of its own. Senior guard Marlon King got the run going, and junior guard Nate Rakestraw tied the game at 10-10 with a short jumper.
The second half was back and forth, but Concordia would eventually pull away and after Worthy’s three-pointer Concordia would seal the win by knocking down seven straight free throws.
Biola saw its 16-game winning streak come to and end, falling to 16-1 overall and to 6-1 in conference play. Concordia extends its school record to 17-0 and takes over the top spot in the GSAC with a perfect 7-0 record.
Biola will now look to rebound with a big win on Tuesday (Jan. 19) as the Eagles host the Master’s College in a GSAC clash at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Gymnasium.
