The women’s softball team traveled to Arizona on Feb. 27 to play Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Biola took both games in decisive fashion, winning by a score of 12-0 and 16-2.

Biola scored runs early, capitalizing on a leadoff home run by junior center Bria Madrid. Junior third baseman Heather Hall scored after Embry-Riddle’s catcher dropped the third strike and was forced to throw out the runner on first. Biola followed their two runs with a quick three outs to finish the first inning with a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles continued scoring runs, adding two more to their total in the second and five in the fourth, thanks to an error by Embry-Riddle and a two RBI double by freshman third baseman Selina Sherlin. Biola finished the inning with a 9-0 lead and added three more runs in the fifth to finish the victory 12-0.

Senior right-handed pitcher Reba Depriest pitched five scoreless innings, dealing four strikeouts, while only allowing one hit. Depriest was followed on the mound by sophomore right handed pitcher Kimmy Triolo. Triolo prevented Embry-Riddle from any hits while striking out two batters.

The second game was another Biola blowout. The lead was fueled by an eight run fifth inning. Senior second baseman Ashley Spadt, sophomore outfielder Kasey Hormel and Sherlin all hit a homerun in the fifth, driving in six total runs.  The Eagles finished the game 16-2.

Biola now holds a season record of 12-6, and will play Arizona Christian University on Feb. 28. The Firestorm are currently 3-1 this season and have yet to play a conference game.
