A creekside contemplation

Hidden in plain sight

This week’s hidden in plain sight is a place for many things. From grass naps to rolling contests, this hidden place can provide hours of peace and relaxation. If you’re fixing for a nap, head out in the sunny afternoon hours. But if contemplative observation suits you, try making your way just after the sun falls.

From Jesus, make your way toward upper campus. As you walk under the trees alongside the cafe, imagine the days forthcoming when the leaves in the trees will litter the ground you walk on.

Continue on toward Emerson Hall and notice the one tall, slender and white fake plastic looking tree as it shoots into the sky. Next go down the street and walk on the right side of Horton Hall. Do your best to fend off the thoughts of an insane asylum that flood your mind as you walk past the brick-walled fortress, instead focusing on the Baptist crew-cut club of former presidents that hangs majestically on the building wall. Notice too the climate confused landscaping that litters the dormitory’s walls.

As you make it to the end of the road, find your way to a sidewalk that begins just to your left. Follow its zig-zag pattern toward a concrete bridge that hangs over a steadily flowing stream. Walk up the cutback concrete toward a cluster of bushes.

You’ve found this week’s hidden place once you’ve sat in the surrounding grass and pondered how odd the bushes really are. If you’ve come at dusk, notice the streetlight-cast shadow of a crumbling wooden fence and its elegant path alongside the zig-zagging sidewalk. Look out at trees across the creek, silhouetted by the fading sun, as well as the water reflections of a streetlamp tucked in palm trees across the road.
